Guzmania lingulata is one of the most popular species of Guzmania. Its common name is the scarlet star. The scarlet star has long, flat, glossy green leaves with smooth margins. The leaves come together to form a star shape in the middle. The flower on this plant is actually a grouping of modified leaves, called bracts. Guzmania lingulata is most famous for its brilliant pink or red flower bracts but can also be found in shades of yellow and orange depending on the variety. The true flowers are tiny white and do not rise above the colorful bracts. The blooms can last 2-4 months. Guzmania lingulata is an ideal indoor or office plant. They survive well in low light conditions and tolerant of artificial light. They cannot, be exposed to intense direct sunlight. The plant can grow as tall as two feet and as wide as two feet.

Growth Habits

Most Guzmania are epiphytic meaning they use their roots to attach to a host plant such as a tree rather than grow in the ground. Epiphytes are not parasitic and do not cause any damage to their host. Guzmania can be either mounted on a substrate or planted in a pot. Because Guzmania roots act primarily as an anchor rather than a source for water and nutrients.

Water

Guzmania take in water through their central tank and leaves in addition to their roots. A cup toward the base of the plant. Never put water in the bracts or flowering portion of the plant. It will shorten the life of the inflorescence. Make sure to flush the cup regularly to avoid disease and the build up of minerals found in the water.

Temperature

Guzmania; Interior Landscapers; Plantscape Designs Inc. interior plant care;
Guzmania Bromeliad

Because Guzmania are native to tropical areas, they prefer warmer temperatures and humidity. A healthy plant will produce pups before it dies. Pups can be removed from the plant and transplanted to their own pot or they can be allowed to grow in clumps attached to the mother plant.

Pests

The Guzmania does not suffer from many pests especially when grown indoors.

Species

There are many species of Guzmania besides lingulata There are 135 different species and 348 cultivars listed in the Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies’ Bromeliad Photo Index. Guzmania come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.

Redesigning The Boston Design Center Boston, MA with Ficus Lyrata green plants.

Plantscape Design Inc. has recently helped redesign the Boston Design Center with live green interior tropical Ficus Lyrata plants (commonly known as Fiddle Leaf Figs) and Architectural Supplements' Earth Wall and Earth Cube containers in a spectacular burnt orange finish.

Boston Design Center needed a green plant tropical presence in their halls and lobby areas to greet talented interior designers from all over New England. The Ficus Lyrata trees were stately but welcoming to all visitors in this Boston, MA location.

Jen, one of twenty, of our PDI plant specialist staff technicians has been servicing this building most recently. Brian, John and Pam installed this massive green plant design of tropical trees, which comprised almost two days of work to install.

Orchid with Tillandsias PDI Flower Rotational Programs Concord, MA.

        interior flower and green plant care and Maintenance;
        Phaleonopsis Orchid with Tillandsias

Orchid and Tillandsias work well together in live PDI flowering Rotation Programs.

        1. Light:
Lighting for Tillandsias should be bright but filtered (April - October). They should not be left in the direct sun in the summer months (this will cause the plant to become sunburned ). Tillandsias love direct sun (November - March). Tillandsias may be grown in the house directly in front of a window. Fresh moving air is advisable, but remember, the most important care need is bright filtered light.

        2. Artificial Light:
Full spectrum artificial light (fluorescent) is best. Plant should be no further than 36" from the fluorescent tubes and can be as close as 6". A four-tube 48" fixture works well. Bulbs can be any full spectrum type Gro-Lux, Repta-Sun, Vita-Lite, etc. Light should be set with a timer, 12 hours per day.

        3. Water:
Always wet your Tillandsia 2-3 times per week; more often in a hot, dry environment; less often in a cool, humid one. Plants should be given enough light and air circulation to dry in no longer than 4 hours after watering. Spray misting is insufficient as the sole means of watering but may be beneficial between regular waterings in dry climates to increase the humidity.

If the plant is in a bowl be sure to empty the water out.  Tillandsias will not survive in standing water. They will rot!

        4. Air Circulation:
Following each watering, Tillandsias should be given enough light and air circulation to dry in 4 hours or less. Do not keep plants constantly wet or moist.

        5. Temperature:Optimum temperature range for tillandsias is 50 - 90 degrees F.

              Clean air with green plants
Contemporary buildings are sealed tightly to increase HVAC efficiency. Inside those sealed environments, man-made particles such as paints, plastics, insulation, plywood, carpets, synthetic fibers and detergents emit up to 300 harmful pollutants.
Diagram showing the biology of plants in terms of how they clean the air
Carcinogens filtered out by common office plants

However, many tropical plants possess the ability to not only beautify your interior environment; they filter these pollutants from the air.

NASA funded studies directed by Dr. B. C. Wolverton, a 20-year veteran in horticulture research, proved that the plants commonly used in interior plantscaping cleanse the air of many harmful pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene.

Material distributed by the Plants for Clean Air Council demonstrates that plants remove pollutants in varying quantities. The council recommends one potted plant for each 100 square feet of floor space.

                  1. Aphid insect detection is ongoing at Waltham's, MA interior office environments by PDI interior landscapers. Occasionally our clients interior green plants have aphids and scale that literary suck the life juices out of them.

                  2. Plantscape Designs Inc. inherits many of these insect infested indoor office plants from our former competitors.

                  3. We first wash all of these inherited plants with 50% isopropyl alcohol, eliminating the adult stages of these pests.

                  4. Second, we scrape the top one inch of soil that may have hundreds of insect eggs not hatched yet. PDI then discards this soil with eggs.

                  5. Thirdly, we apply an all natural, pesticide-free insect predators called nematodes in the form of crawling, not flying, insect larvae to totally devour all eggs remaining in the green plants top soil.

Plantscape Designs Inc. inherits 36 new accounts every year from various competitors who do not do a great job of interior care of office plants in Waltham, MA.

Many thrips are pests of commercial crops due to the damage caused by feeding on developing flowers or vegetables, causing discoloration, deformities, and reduced marketability of the crop. Thrips may also serve as vectors for plant diseases, such as Tospoviruses.

Over 20 plant-infecting viruses are known to be transmitted by thrips. These enveloped viruses are considered among some of the most damaging of emerging plant pathogens around the world. Virus members include the tomato spotted wilt virus and the impatiens necrotic spot viruses. The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis,  now has a worldwide distribution and is considered the primary vector of plant diseases caused by Tospoviruses.
This global explosion in thrips species' range is not uncommon, as their small sizes and predisposition towards enclosed places makes them difficult to detect by phytosanitary inspection. When coupled with the increasing globalization of trade and the growth of greenhouse agriculture, thrips, unsurprisingly, are among the fastest growing group of invasive species in the world. Examples include the aforementioned Frankliniella occidentalis, Scritothrips dorsalis and Trips palmi.
Flower-feeding thrips are routinely attracted to bright floral colors (including white, blue, and especially yellow), and will land and attempt to feed.

Plantscape Designs Inc encounters many trip infestations on interior green plants and flowers.

Biological beneficial predator or parasite controls are injected into to these troublesome areas.

Using Bird Nest Ferns in your Interior PlantscapeOoffice Design Woburn, MA

A Birds Nest Fern pictured here at one of our Woburn clients office reception is the perfect alternative to the pothos plant so commonly used in such dark office environments in Woburn, MA

                      1. Asplenium nidus forms large simple fronds visually similar to banana leaves, with the fronds growing to 50–150 cm long and 10–20 cm broad. They are light green, often crinkled, with a black midrib, and exhibit circinate vernation. Spores develop in sori on the underside of the fronds. These sori form long rows extending out from the midrib on the back of the outer part of the lamina (frond). The fronds roll back as they brown and create a massive leaf nest in the branches and trunks of trees.
